Student services
Services to help our students achieve

At William Morris we focus on looking after every individual to help them achieve success. We recognise that students require extra support beyond classroom teaching and we offer this in a variety of ways, including:

Student destinations

One of the strongest features of William Morris Sixth Form is the work we do to enable students to progress onto the next level of education, no matter what their starting point was. Each year, approximately 85% of second year advanced level students go to university after leaving here. Many of them are the first members of their family to go into higher education.

We also have a tradition of students who join us initially for one year staying on for a further course. This means that students who did not gain the qualifications to study at advanced level whilst at secondary school can do so after one year with us, and students who start on level 1 courses nearly always stay on for a second year at level 2. They then have a far better chance of gaining a place on a training scheme, in employment or in further education. It is one of our foremost aims to encourage students to set themselves high expectations in their future education and careers.

We have our own specialist careers staff who give students all year round help with researching into and applying for university, further education and employment. In addition to offering as many individual interviews as students need, we run annual careers and higher education events and accompany students to national careers and university fairs.

As part of the celebrations for our tenth year in December 2003, we invited past students to tell their 'life stories' since leaving us.They impressed the audience with their university successes, the range of professions they had entered, and their confident outlooks. All paid tribute to their experience at William Morris Sixth Form and the inspiration they had gained from studying with us.

Learning Resource Centre

We have an excellent Learning Resource Centre, staffed by a qualified and experienced team, offering stock and services to support students for all their learning needs. For full details of the facilities and links to recommended resources, please click on the VLE link.

A Personal Tutor

Every student is in a tutor group with a personal tutor. The tutor is responsible for monitoring each student’s overall progress, conducting regular reviews and generally supporting each tutee. The tutor will help students research and apply for further education, university or employment. The tutor will also have regular contact with parents. Their tutor is the first person a student contacts if he or she encounters difficulties.

Learning & Language Support

All students can access extra support by visiting F6 or F7, the Learning and Language Support area. The area is well resourced with computers, learning materials and above all friendly and supportive staff who are keen to help. If a student is finding it difficult to complete an assignment or put an essay together there are teachers available in the learning support area to help. Students who like to work in a friendly and supportive environment often drop in to F6 and F7 to complete work.

If English is not the first language there are also specialist English teachers available to help develop language skills. Students with more serious learning difficulties will get individual support in some lessons using staff from LLS.

Learning Mentoring

We also have a small team of Learning Mentors available who work with students who are encountering difficulties and need some extra support. Support is available for students who have problems settling in, who face challenges in their home life, who are struggling with the demands of the course and who are generally feeling unmotivated. The learning mentor will help students become more organised, become less stressed and will also provide valuable advice and support. The mentor will meet with a student for regular one to one meetings where any problems can be shared and support provided. Small manageable targets are set and reviewed to help the student keep on track.

Immigration Support

There is a dedicated member of staff who is able to offer specific support to students who are refugees or asylum seekers.

Counselling

Some students will face challenging personal and emotional problems while with us. We have two professional counsellors and they provide free confidential individual sessions to students. If a student is experiencing diffculties during his or her time at William Morris, they will be happy to see the student on a regular basis or even for a single session.

Both counsellors are based in our new student services centre which is on the first floor of the refurbished house.

Careers and Higher Education Guidance

We also have two careers specialists who support our students as they prepare to move on from the William Morris. One specialist focuses on university and other higher education options while the other specialist focuses on employment, training and further education. They provide students with vital information and guidance while also supporting our tutors to develop high quality careers education. We provide an extensive programme that helps our students apply successfully for university. This includes annual higher education events held on site. We are proud that so many students go to university each year and that those who do not are guided into further education colleges, employment, training or apprenticeship schemes.

Facilities

Our building is attractive, well cared for, and equipped with the latest technologies for learning. The main Windows based computer network is supplemented by an Apple Mac network in the Art & Design and Media block, and there is wireless access across the whole site. There are extensive computer facilities including interactive whiteboards in most classrooms and laptop computers for student use.

The canteen is open for breakfast and throughout the morning for drinks and snacks. A full lunch service operates from 12 to 2pm, providing a range of healthy meals with an
extensive salad bar. One of the advantages of being a school rather than a college is that free school meals are available to eligible students.

Other facilities include dance and drama studios, art and photography rooms, language teaching rooms with wall-mounted listening and speaking posts, and well equipped science laboratories.
